چکیده

and Plan of Paper The Stomachion is the least understood of Archimedes' works. This paper provides a reconstruction of its goal and structure. The nature of the evidence, including new readings from the Archimedes Palimpsest, is discussed in detail. Based on this evidence, it is argued that the Stomachion was a treatise of geometrical combinatorics. This new interpretation is made possible thanks to recent studies showing the existence of sophisticated combinatorial research in antiquity. The key to the new interpretation, in this case, is the observation that Archimedes might have focussed not on the possibility of creating many different figures by different arrangements of the pieces but on the way in which the same overall figure is obtained by many different arrangements of the pieces. The plan of the paper is as follows. Section 1 introduces the Stomachion. Section 2 discusses the ancient testimonies and the Arabic fragment, while Section 3 translates and discusses the Gr~ek fragment. Section 4 sums up the mathematical reconstruction offered in this paper, while Section 5 points at the possible intellectual background to the work. Appendix A contains a transcription of the Greek fragment, appendix B an English translation with redrawn diagrams, appendix C a reproduction of the digitally enhanced images of the pages of the palimpsest containing remains of the Stomachion.

The Archimedes Codex

We learned, of course, something of the curious story of the oldest (by 400 years) surviving manuscript of some of Arch imedes ’ works, collected in a Byzantine codex that contained the end of Equilibrium of Planes , great parts of The Sphere and the Cylinder and Measurement of the Circle, a sizable portion of On Floating Bodies, one folio of The Stomachion, and a large portion of The Method. T...

Promoting and teaching “hard” science in an amusing way: the “Domus Archimedea” approach to Greek mathematics

Hard Sciences, and Mathematics in particular, are often abstract disciplines; our difficulties are both in learning and teaching them, and we need to explain concepts through visual examples, models, real objects’ manipulation. It is fundamental to find a good teaching strategy, and new multimedia tools can help us. The “Domus Archimedea” is an Interactive Science and Technology Museum dedicate...

An Optimization Model for Financial Resource Allocation Towards Seismic Risk Reduction

This paper presents a study on determining the degree of effectiveness of earthquake risk mitigation measures and how to prioritize such efforts in developing countries. In this paper a model is proposed for optimizing funds allocation towards risk reduction measures (building retrofitting) and reconstruction process after potential earthquakes in a regional level. The proposed model seeks opti...

Towards a Completion of Archimedes’ Treatise on Floating Bodies

In the said treatise Archimedes determines the equilibrium positions of a floating paraboloid segment, but only in the case when the basis of the segment is either completely outside of the fluid or completely submerged. Here we give a mathematical model for the remaining case, i.e., two simple conditions which describe the equilibria in closed form. We provide tools for finding all equilibria ...

The empirical basis of equilibrium: Mach, Vailati, and the lever

About a century ago, Ernst Mach argued that Archimedes’s deduction of the principle of the lever is invalid, since its premises contain the conclusion to be demonstrated. Subsequently, many scholars defended Archimedes, mostly on historical grounds, by raising objections to Mach’s reconstruction of Archimedes’s deduction. In the debate, the Italian philosopher and historian of science Giovanni ...
